2. Androgenetic Alopecia — It Affects Women Too
Female-pattern hair loss is a hereditary condition involving sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) at the follicle level. It's not identical to male-pattern baldness — women typically experience thinning at the crown and widening of the parting rather than a receding hairline. It begins earlier than most people expect: onset in the mid-twenties is not unusual.

3. Thyroid Dysfunction

Hair follicles are highly sensitive to thyroid hormone, and even subclinical thyroid dysfunction — where TSH is technically within range but not optimal — can trigger telogen effluvium (a condition where follicles prematurely enter the resting phase and shed).

4. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Elevated androgen levels associated with PCOS trigger the same DHT-mediated miniaturisation of follicles seen in androgenetic alopecia. In women with PCOS, hair loss on the scalp often coexists with unwanted hair growth on the face or body.
The clue: a pattern consistent with androgenetic alopecia alongside irregular cycles, acne that worsens around menstruation, or increased facial hair. PCOS-related hair loss requires hormonal management in addition to any topical or procedural treatment.

5. Telogen Effluvium — Delayed Shedding After a Trigger
Telogen effluvium is a temporary but alarming form of hair loss triggered by a significant physiological shock two to four months prior. Common triggers include rapid weight loss, illness, major surgery, childbirth, high fever, or a period of extreme psychological stress. The hair doesn't fall immediately — it enters a resting phase and sheds weeks or months later, which is why patients often can't identify the cause.
The clue: sudden, diffuse shedding that began two to four months after a stressful period, illness, crash diet, or hormonal shift. Why Identifying Your Specific Cause Matters So Much
