What Is HIFU?
HIFU — High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound — is a non-invasive treatment that delivers precise thermal energy to specific depths within the skin and underlying soft tissue. Unlike surface-level skin treatments, HIFU bypasses the epidermis entirely and deposits focused energy at 1.5 mm (dermis), 3.0 mm (deep dermis) and 4.5 mm (SMAS) depths. At each focal point, a tiny thermal coagulation zone is created, triggering the body's natural wound-healing and collagen-regeneration response.
The SMAS — Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System — is the fibromuscular layer responsible for structural support of the face. It is the same layer that surgeons reposition during a surgical facelift. This dual-frequency capability allows Dr. Bedi to address structural laxity and superficial skin quality within the same session — adapting to the anatomy of each facial zone.
Three transducer depths are available: 1.5 mm targets the superficial dermis for skin texture and fine line improvement, 3.0 mm works within the deep reticular dermis for collagen remodelling and skin tightening, and 4.5 mm reaches the SMAS layer for structural lifting. For most patients, a full face and neck protocol combines all three depths across the relevant anatomical zones.
Each pass of the transducer deposits a line of thermal coagulation points spaced at precise intervals. The thermal injury at each focus point is contained — surrounding tissue is not heated. As the coagulation zones heal, they generate new collagen and elastin and cause existing collagen fibres to contract, producing measurable tissue lift and skin tightening over the following months.

Before, During and After Your Treatment
Preparation
- No special skin preparation is required before HIFU.
- Remove all makeup before your appointment. We will apply ultrasound gel during the procedure.
- Inform your specialist if you have any metal implants, facial fillers or implants in the treatment area.
- Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, aspirin) for 3 days before if comfortable to do so, as inflammation is part of the healing response HIFU relies on.
During the procedure
Ultrasound gel is applied to the treatment area. The HIFU transducer is passed across the skin in systematic anatomical zones, delivering focused energy at the prescribed depths. You will feel a deep warmth or mild heating sensation as the ultrasound focuses beneath the skin — this is normal and indicates the energy is reaching the target tissue. A full face and neck session typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. Numbing cream is available if preferred.
After treatment
- Mild redness and slight swelling may be present for 2 to 4 hours — both resolve without any intervention.
- Tenderness to touch in the treated area is normal for 1 to 2 days.
- No downtime — you may return to all activities, including work and social engagements, immediately.
- Apply SPF 50+ daily. Avoid saunas and intense heat treatments for 48 hours.
- Results build progressively over 3 to 6 months. A follow-up review at 3 months is recommended.
